Fermo became a densely populated city in the Roman Ages.
Today we can still admire the cisterne romane, the underground cisterns built by the Romans (1st century) to provide the water for the city.

ITINERARY.  The itinerary is composed of a morning tour called “Crossing Fermo: Girfalco and Corso Cefalonia”, and an afternoon tour called “Crossing Fermo: museums and Church of San Francesco”.
(Visitors can buy the complete itinerary or a single tour).

MORNING TOUR: Girfalco and Corso Cefalonia. The meeting point is Piazza del Popolo, the beautiful central square of Fermo, built in the Renaissance (16th Cenruty). The guide shows the historic buildings of the square: Town Hall, Church of San Rocco, Library, Palazzo dei Priori. Then he moves to Girfalco, the highest square of Fermo, where there are the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and a graceful park with benches and a kindergarten. Leaving Girfalco and crossing ancient alleys like Via del Teatro Antico, the guide reaches Corso Cefalonia, the most important way of the old town, with the medieval Matteucci Tower, Palazzo Vitali-Rosati and Palazzo Azzolino. We can reach also the churches of Sant’Agostino and San Zenone. The morning tour ends in Piazza del Popolo, where visitors can have lunch and relax.

AFTERNOON: Museums and Church of San Francesco. The meeting point is Piazza del Popolo. The guide explains the art gallery in Palazzo dei Priori, that hosts important paintings like the Stories of St. Lucy by Jacobello del Fiore (15th Century) and the Adorazione dei pastori by Peter Rubens (1608). Next to the Town Hall there’s the Theatre Dell’Aquila, one of the most beautiful Italian theatre, built by Cosimo Morelli (18th Century). Then the guide moves to the Roman cisterns, an underground place built by the Romans to preserve water and to distribute it in the city. The tour ends with the visit of the Church of San Francesco, that hosts medieval frescoes (13th Century).

S. Elpidio a Mare

TOUR NAME : Discovering Sant’Elpidio a Mare
DURATION: 3 hours

ITINERARY. Meeting point in Porta Romana, next to the bus stop. The guide walks along Corso Baccio, showing impressive alleys like Cunicchio and Porta Canale. We reach Piazza Matteotti, the  main square of the old town, with the Town Hall, the Church of Santa Maria and the Church of Sant’Elpidio The Abbot. Here we can climb the wonderful Gerosolimitana Tower”built by the crusaiders (14th century). The tower is 28 metres high and preserves medieval symbols, like the Malta cross in the façade .

We can visit also the Vittore Crivelli Civic Gallery, placed in Corso Baccio. It hosts two important polyptyches by Vittore Crivelli. In the same building we can visit the Museum Of Shoes. In a sunny day, I suggest to take a walk along the ancient walls…

Falerone

TOUR NAME : Discovering Falerone
DURATION: 3 hours

ITINERARY.  Meeting point at the gate of the Roman Theatre of Falerone.
It’s the archeological area of Falerone, where it was placed the Roman city called Falerio Picenus.
Visitors can still observe the great theatre built in the 1st century A.D.

After the visit of the Roman Theatre, the guide moves to the medieval town by car or mini-bus.
Today Falerone (altitude of 432 metres, inhabitants 3442) is a graceful town close the Apennines and not far from the Adriatic Sea.
We can cross the silent streets and take pictures of landscapes and monuments.

In Piazza della Libertà, the main square of the old town, we see the Loggia dei Mercanti, a two tiers building of round arches supported by columns. The Church of San Fortunato, that faces the Merchants Loggia, hosts the painting “Worship of the Child” (1479) by Vittore Crivelli.

Porto San Giorgio

TOUR NAME: Discovering Porto San Giorgio
DURATION: 3 hours

ITINERARY. Porto San Giorgio (altitude of 4 metres, inhabitants 16091) is a well-known seaside resort. I like visit this place in every season, because it always offers some pleasant event. The meeting point is the Theatre Vittorio Emanuele II, built in 1813. After the visit of the theatre, the guide moves to the stronghold Rocca Tiepolo (1267), by the name of Lorenzo Tiepolo, lord of Fermo and Venice. In the central ways of the city visitors can have time for shopping. Walking along the promenade, the group reaches the port, where the tour ends.

Monte San Pietrangeli

Monte San Pietrangeli (altitude of 241 metres, inhabitants 2568) was a medieval castle. At the beginning of 16th century pope Paul III put the town under the direct jurisdiction of the Holy See.

The monastery of St. Peter was founded in 1080 and it was given to the Franciscans in 1270. It preserves the cloister with colonnade. The church hosts the polyptych Madonna with Child and Saints by Giuliano Presutti da Fano.

In the via Roma we find the Gothic Civic Tower (14th century),

and the Monument to the local artist Luigi Fontana (1928).

Outside the town walls, we discover the Church of St. Lawrence and Blaise by Giuseppe Valadier (1859). It’s one of the best Neoclassical churches in the country. The facade shows six cylindrical columns.

Monsampietro Morico

Monsampietro Morico (altitude of 289 metres, inhabitants 712) is composed by the Old Town and the hamlet called Sant’Elpidio Morcico.

Pedaso

Pedaso (altitude of 4 metres, inhabitants 2409) was a medieval castle on the top of the hill, abandoned during the 18th century, when people started to slide down and build a new city next to the coast. I like take a rest on the sea cliffs, walking on the peaceful and not crowded seafront.

The sightseeing tour includes the Church of St. Mary and St. Peter and the visit of the lighthouse.

If you are looking for a good fish restaurant, book in “Tilt 2”, settled behind the Church of St.Mary and St.Peter. Leaving Pedaso, we can visit Lapedona, Moresco, Ortezzano, Fermo, Ascoli Piceno. The road that goes from Pedaso to the Apennines is called “Valdaso” (“Val” means valley, “Aso” is a river).
